Aquí deberás no solo entender a la perfección los pasajes de lectura, sino tener la capacidad para razonar lo que comprendes de forma clara y concisa. Lograrlo con éxito pasa por utilizar efectivamente la información que se te suministra en los textos. La complejidad de esta sección es la gran variedad de tipos de pregunta que posee, por lo cual es bastante diversa y completa.
La manera más atinada de experimentar tu proceso de preparación para el TOEFL Reading es practicando con ejercicios que se asemejen en gran medida al formato real del test. Veamos 10 tipos de pregunta que debes conocer para pasar con la mejor nota la parte del reading en el examen TOEFL.
Ejemplos de preguntas de la sección del Reading del TOEFL
1- Preguntas de información básica
Los ejercicios de este tipo están basados en la información objetiva inmersa en los pasajes de lectura. Se trata de poseer la habilidad para identificar la información clave, las ideas principales dentro del texto. Se subdividen entre los tres siguientes tipos de pregunta de nuestra lista: Objetivas, objetivas negativas y de vocabulario.
2- Preguntas objetivas
Apuntan directamente hacia los hechos y fundamentos que se encuentran explícitos en los pasajes de lectura. Si prestas atención, verás lo sencillo que es relacionar el contexto del contenido con los enunciados de las opciones que dispones para escoger como tu respuesta.
Ejemplo:
According to paragraph 3, how did scientists determine that a large meteorite had impacted Earth?
a. They discovered a large crater in the Yucatán region of Mexico.
b. They found a unique layer of sediment worldwide.
c. They were alerted by archaeologists who had been excavating in the Yucatán region.
d. They located a meteorite with a mass of over a trillion tons.
3- Preguntas objetivas negativas
Requieren identificar qué parte del pasaje es falsa, aquello que se contradice o es incorrecto. Lee con cuidado especial y estarás preparado para escoger la respuesta correcta, aplicando un simple análisis lógico.
Ejemplo:
According to paragraph 4, all of the following statements are true of the impact at the end of the Cretaceous period EXCEPT:
a. A large amount of dust blocked sunlight from Earth.
b. Earth became cold and dark for several months.
c. New elements were formed in Earth’s crust.
d. Large quantities of nitric acid were produced.
4- Preguntas de vocabulario
Deberás poner en práctica tus habilidades para comprender palabras específicas dentro del contexto del párrafo en cuestión. Por ejemplo, se te pedirá relacionar el significado de una palabra, pero que tenga pleno sentido en el contexto, como te lo indicamos arriba. Entonces, no te dejes engañar: Todo depende de la coyuntura, de lo que se esté tratando exclusivamente. El tema o tópico que refiere una palabra con distintas acepciones puede darle un sentido totalmente diferente a la misma.

a. digging out
b. extending
c. destroying
d. covering up
5- Preguntas de inferencia
Trabajar con el significado del texto como un todo es la tarea aquí. Inferir, en todo el sentido de la palabra, información que se desprende de lo explícito. Así que, pese a que las respuestas a este tipo de pregunta no se encuentran dentro del pasaje de lectura, deberías encontrar muy fácil hallar la respuesta correcta si comprendes bien el significado de lo que estás leyendo.
Así como trabajamos anteriormente con los mensajes explícitos, en esta oportunidad llega el turno del mensaje implícito, lo que se sobreentiende pero no se dice textualmente en la información. Aplica la lógica, el sentido común y el pensamiento analítico para salir con una victoria.
Ejemplo:
Which of the following can be inferred from paragraph 3 about the location of the meteorite impact in Mexico?
a. The location of the impact site in Mexico was kept secret by geologists from 1980 to 1990.
b. It was a well-known fact that the impact had occurred in the Yucatán region.
c. Geologists knew that there had been an impact before they knew where it had occurred.
d. The Yucatán region was chosen by geologists as the most probable impact site because of its climate.
6- Preguntas de retórica
Ahora adentrémonos en la mente del autor del pasaje de lectura… Comprendamos su intención, su propósito, el “por qué” o “why”. Aplica el razonamiento y llegarás al fondo de la situación correctamente.
Ejemplo:
In paragraph 2, why does the author include the information that dinosaurs had flourished for tens of millions of years and then suddenly disappeared?
a. To support the claim that the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous is the best-documented of the dozen or so mass extinctions in the geological record
b. To explain why as many as half of the species on Earth at the time are believed to have become extinct at the end of the Cretaceous
c. To explain why paleontologists have always been intrigued by the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous
d. To provide evidence that an impact can be large enough to disturb the environment of the entire planet and cause an ecological disaster
7- Preguntas de referencia
En este punto deberás identificar de forma correcta la relación entre las sentencias de los pasajes de lectura, con base a la comprensión total del texto.
Ejemplo:
The word “look” in Paragraph 5, page 12, refers to:
a. Clothing
b. Eyes wide open
c. See the show online
d. Searching for casting
8- Simplificación de sentencias
Haz un resumen general acerca de todo lo que has comprendido en la lectura. Una vez hayas realizado ese análisis en tu pensamiento rápidamente, estarás preparado para escoger la sentencia que mejor describa el sentido de la fuente de información que te fue suministrada para el ejercicio.
Ejemplo:
Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the following sentence?
Earth is a target in a cosmic shooting gallery, subject to random violent events that were unsuspected a few decades ago.
Incorrect choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.
a. Until recently, nobody realized that Earth is exposed to unpredictable violent impacts from space.
b. In the last few decades, the risk of a random violent impact from space has increased.
c. Since most violent events on Earth occur randomly, nobody can predict when or where they will happen.
d. A few decades ago, Earth became the target of random violent events originating in outer space.
9- Texto de inserción
Llegó la hora de subir a lo más alto tu nivel de comprensión de lectura: Las preguntas de texto de inserción exigen un entendimiento profundo de las conexiones gramaticales en las sentencias en cuestión. Deberás determinar en qué párrafo existente encaja mejor una nueva sentencia que se te dará para completar la tarea.
Ejemplo:
Look at the four letters (A, B, C, and D) that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage in paragraph 6.
This is the criterion emphasized by Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection.
Where would the sentence best fit?

10- Leer para aprender
Las preguntas “Reading to learn” tienen fama de ser las más difíciles de la sección Reading o prueba de lectura del TOEFL, pues deberás poner en práctica todo lo que sabes y trabajar con la totalidad de información dentro de un pasaje de lectura para responder correctamente. Tendrás que reconocer las ideas principales y separarlas de las secundarias, determinar el propósito del autor y sintetizar la información. Estas preguntas tienen un valor de 2 puntos.
