  • The brand was awarded a tender for 1,002 bus units in Bogotá, surpassing diesel and natural gas technologies.

Bogotá, Colombia.- BYD is proud to announce that it has been awarded cumulative orders to supply 1,002 units of 100% electric buses to the Colombian capital, Bogotá. This tender was open to all bus technologies, but BYD gained the trust and cooperation of its partners in highly competitive processes thanks to its cutting-edge technologies, products and services. It is the largest order for 100% electric buses outside of China to date, setting a new sales volume record for the electric bus industry in the world.

Bogotá's public transport authority TransMilenio SA launched a public tender for 1,295 buses in August, covering diesel, natural gas and electric technologies. Three BYD strategic partners adopted BYD electric bus integrated solutions for their offerings and successfully won the tender, winning a total order of 1,002 units. BYD will partner with local bus manufacturers Superpolo and BUSSCAR, respectively, on the bus body parts.

The delivery of this fleet of buses is scheduled for 2021 and the first half of 2022, and will be put into operation on 34 routes in five regions of the capital, providing residents with quiet, safe trips and an emission-free service.

Like the 470 buses delivered by BYD to Bogotá in December 2020, this batch of 1,002 buses also includes 9 and 12 meter models.

With highly recognized technology, products and services, this thousand unit order opens a new era

In this competition covering all bus technologies, BYD, relying on its solid capacity and main strengths, has won an exclusive order of 1,002 electric buses, which fully demonstrates the high recognition and confidence of the market in the technology, products and BYD services.

To date, the company has been awarded a total of 1,472 electric buses in the Colombian capital. According to TransMilenio SA, these buses will reduce 83,433 tons of carbon dioxide and 9.63 tons of particulate emissions per year, compared to the fifth generation European emissions standard diesel buses (Euro V), during the concession period of 15 years, which will greatly improve local air quality and Colombia's overall ability to cope with climate change.

In addition to Bogotá, BYD buses operate in Medellín, Cali and other places, now adding a total of 1,550 100% electric buses in Colombia and continuously leading the drive for the electrification of public transport in the country and in Latin America.

"This order for more than 1,000 buses marks a new beginning, which will effectively promote the rapid development of sustainable transportation in Latin America and the next era of global bus electrification," said Stella Li, BYD President for the Americas. "In the move towards electrification globally, BYD will continue to make great contributions in the future," he said.

“Assembling the bus body parts in Colombia will not only help boost the national economy by creating qualified jobs for the local community, but will also improve the quality of transportation services, reduce carbon emissions and improve the environment. ”Said María Fernanda Ortiz, director of TransMilenio SA.

"As the world's leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles, BYD has overcome many difficulties resulting from the pandemic and won this tender solely because of our comprehensive capabilities," said Lara Zhang, Regional Director of BYD Latin America. "We are very grateful for the trust and recognition of all our strategic clients, and we are also looking forward to working with Superpolo and BUSSCAR on this exciting project."

A key player in the wave of transport electrification that is sweeping through Latin America

Since BYD entered the Colombian market in 2012, it has made several strides, including the establishment of the first fleet of 100% electric taxis in Latin America in Bogotá in 2013. BYD has a market share of more than 96.5% of electric buses in Colombia and, what is more impressive, 99% in the capital, Bogotá.

The increasingly stringent emission standards of various countries around the world have undoubtedly promoted policies for cleaner and more sustainable transportation. According to a report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) in 2019, Colombia aims to have a national population of 600,000 new energy vehicles by 2030. As the first company in the world to propose the strategy of "Electrified Public Transport", BYD has been become a key player in the wave of transport electrification that is sweeping through Latin America. In Chile, as in Colombia, BYD has become the leading provider of local electric transport: by the end of 2020, the brand had delivered 455 electric buses to Santiago, the capital of Chile, with a market share close to 56%.

Today BYD's new energy product footprint has spread across major Latin American markets, including Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Barbados, Panama, Costa Rica, Uruguay, and Argentina, and is gaining praise from the market for its reliable quality. and its remarkable environmental benefits.
