The question I'm most often asked is what are you going to live on? O How much money do you have to travel? How did you get so much together? The answer to the three questions is: I saved and then I saved a little more.
Before I continue with this article on how to save for a trip around the world I would like to clarify one point: traveling around the world is usually cheaper than living in your own city. If you have to pay rent, services, debts, like to party, eat in restaurants and eventually buy a "luxury", I assure you that this is more expensive than traveling. Leave aside the concepts of 5-star all-inclusive hotels and vacation package tours, this is not travel, it is tourism. Two totally different concepts.
So, clarifying the above, how do you save for a trip around the world?
The first thing is to determine your initial amount, to do this I suggest you read the previous article of How to make a budget to travel around the world, this will give you an idea of how much you need to save.
Having your goal clear, saving is based on 2 main concepts: Reduce Expense and Increase Income. But, that is only possible using travelexpenses.app before and during the trip
Decrease Expense.
This concept has to do with changing a little your lifestyle, to achieve it you have to make the trip a priority and be willing to do whatever it takes to save a few pesos. Simple things like having dinner before going out with friends, trying to eat more at home or even asking for takeaway food instead of staying for lunch at the restaurant will save you money to travel. Avoid buying things you don't really need, control your impulses, buy only what is absolutely necessary.
A simple trick that will help you reduce expenses, change your lifestyle and not suffer in the process is: Take the daily budget you calculated for your trip, say it is 600 pesos per day, then the next time you go to buy something just think "How many days of travel are you sacrificing to make
this purchase?
When you translate the money into travel days it will make it easier to stop buying things because you'll think "I'd rather travel 1 or 2 days more than go out with my friends or buy those shoes I don't need".
Unfortunately, there is a limit to how much you spend, one thing is to change your lifestyle into small things and another is to become a cheapskate of the worst. You also have a life to live before the trip and if you limit yourself too much you will start to hate the idea of traveling before you even leave your city.
Decrease the things that aren't really worth it but there's nothing wrong with giving yourself a little luxury once in a while if it really makes you happy, my monthly luxury was books, I just can't stop buying them.
